ONLINE DATING AND FIRST DATE SAFETY TIPS
Valentine's Day is in the air and with people going on many first dates, we wanted to remind you that prior to meeting someone for the first time, you should do some research on them! Google their name, run them through the Family Watchdog registry, and even run their name through a background check!
When meeting someone for the first time, make sure to pick a secure location (such as a favorite restaurant or coffee shop) and to stay under intoxicated. Be aware of their body language and look for red flags. Always stay safe!
Many dating apps have a secure background check that members must pass, but always do your own research on top of trusting an app!

The average cost of a couple’s night out on Valentine’s Day is $55.44 in the United States. Tack on some traditional Valentine’s Day mainstays like flowers, candy, cards, and jewelry, and total holiday expenses fall just shy of $200. With that being said, we found some (cheaper) ideas that you can do!
Here's some fun date ideas!
Grab some snacks, wine and some take-out dinner and watch your favorite TV series or movie trilogy! Snuggle up in some cozy pajamas and make this night one to remember!
Check out your area for some local events, either an art show, or high school musical. Explore something new and fun together to get out of the house!
Dress up in a fancy outfit and give off the impression you're looking to purchase a high-end car and take it for a test drive!
This is a fun date idea for existing couples! Drive separately and meet "for the first time" at a bar or restaurant. Talk and explore things you already might not know about each other!
Hit up your favorite thrift store with your partner and a budget. Pick out a complete outfit from head to toe for your partner and have them do the same.
Afterwords dress in your "new to you" outfit and go out on the town!
Find your local shelter and visit with lonely animals. You can volunteer just a few hours and this date actually gives back to the community while you and your partner receive animal smooches!
Date nights are not just for Valentine's Day! Grab a mason jar and popsicle sticks and gather some fun date night ideas together that you want to try!
Maybe after a busy day you just don't want to have a big date - and that's totally understandable! Catch a quick dessert at a local cafe instead of waiting at a restaurant for a table!

CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH
Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, the event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black history.
The story of Black History Month begins in 1915, half a century after the Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery in the United States.

February marks the beginning to tax season. The IRS is mostly caught up from the 2020 back log from the COVID grants that were issued. But to avoid long waits for your refund (if you are entitled to one) - get looking into getting your taxes filed early and correctly!
We love Turbo Tax because how quick, affordable, and easy it is to use for simple refunds!
Scams are an everyday occurrence, but during tax season, scammers really seem to up their game in an attempt to take your money.
Never, ever, ever give any personal information over the phone to someone you do not know. The IRS will not contact you for payment unless it's through the official post office!

Having good credit can mean a difference of getting what you want and what they think you can afford. So, keeping a good eye on your credit report year-round is easy and free through sites like credit karma.
It's also a great opportunity to have "the talk" with your children about maintaining good credit and how to get it.
Before you go and spend all that extra money you might be entitled to this tax season, sit down with your family and prioritize where your money should go. Maybe pay up some bills or put some money in savings for a rainy day!
Don't spend all your money on something you don't need or will cost you a ton in payments over the rest of the year - like a new car. Car dealerships love to take advantage of people during tax time knowing that they may not be able to make payments through the rest of the year.

Family Watchdog wants to do something new and helpful with our newsletter. We want to highlight four random cases from National Center for Missing and Exploited Children so we can bring the awareness of our children missing in the United States. We highly encourage you to visit their website and search in your area to see what children are missing and what you can do to help. Do not approach missing children unless the child is in danger, always call 911 or 1-800-THE-LOST (1-800-843-5678)
Each month we will randomly choose four missing children's cases from the NCMEC website. You can submit a missing children's case to us possibly highlight in one of our newsletters by emailing us.
