Stay Safe On St Patrick's Day

St Patrick's Day is the annual event that witnesses millions of people around the world celebrating their Irish heritage, the color green, and the chance to have a fun time with friends and family.

On March 17th you may be planning your own house party or you may be heading out to celebrate with your family. Wherever you decide to go, whether it's to Savannah to see the river turn green or Boston to watch the St Patrick's Day parades, there will be something on show for all the family to enjoy.

While this is certainly a time to celebrate that doesn't mean you should be any less aware of what is going on around you. In fact, this should be a time when you are extra diligent when it comes to your own and your family's safety, particularly if you have young children with you.

St Patrick's Day attracts large crowds, which is why it's important that you keep an eye on your children at all times. Before you set out you should have a plan set up in case you get separated from your child during the day.

Below are a few safety tips to consider in order to make your St Patrick's Day end incident free.

1. Phone Use. It's important that all your children know how to work a phone. This way if they do become separated from you and they can locate a public phone they will be able to contact you. Make sure they have change on them too in order to work the phone.

2. Point of Interest. Before you set out you should have an idea of where you are going and what points of interest will be in the area. A well-known location will be easy to navigate towards and will make it easy for you to find your lost child when they point out where they are.

3. Stress the Importance of Strangers. From a young age every child should know that they shouldn't talk to strangers. While not all strangers are out to harm young children this you can't be too sure of. Instead, inform them of who to approach if they get lost. For example police officers and fire marshals. They will be able to help your child locate you again and will be in trusted hands during this short period.

4. Keep an Eye Out. While it's easy to forget what's going on around you, it's essential to remember that large crowds have the potential to attract trouble. You want this day to be a memorable one for you and your family, so by keeping an eye out will greatly increase your chances of spotting something and removing your family from a situation that could put them at risk.

Of course that doesn't mean you can't have fun on St Patrick's Day, but simply having the necessary precautions in place will mean that you can avoid a situation that could potentially upset the whole day for everyone involved.

Have a plan set up and make sure everyone knows what that plan is before setting out, so that you and your family can enjoy and remember this day for years to come.
