Spring Break Tips

Every year, 1.5 million students head to various international and U.S. destinations to participate in the week long Spring Break. In most cases, students have been counting down the days until their vacations start; a vacation that many feel they have earned.

However, these days Spring Break is no longer an innocent reprieve from the stresses of college life. Nowadays, it can pose a potentially life threatening situation to the millions that embark on trips across the globe.

In 2004, a survey published by the American Medical Association showed that 91 percent of parents think it is time to bring Spring Break marketing to an end.

And yet while countless parents worry about the safety of their loved ones away from home during Spring Break, there are measures and educated decisions they can make to ensure their safety.

5 Ways to Make Your Spring Break Safe

In order to avoid a disastrous Spring Break, consider these 5 simple self defense tips to make your's safe.

1. Planning your Spring Break is the first step to ensuring your safety during your week away from home. Of course, this is supposed to be a fun vacation, but it is important that you know where you’re going and more importantly where you will be staying during your Spring Break. By having a detailed itinerary of your travel plans, you will be more in control. Research the numerous travel packages available; think about air, hotel and car packages that could save you money and time when you arrive at your destination, thus reducing the vulnerability that many predators may take advantage of if you are unsure of where to go. Also share your itinerary with your family before leaving and give them a written copy along with numbers that they can reach you at.

2. Depending on whom you fly with, or if you are traveling by boat, there may be restrictions on the types of defense devices you are allowed to bring. In order to combat this slight problem, why not enroll in short self defense classes. This way you can still defend yourself if you encounter a situation that proves dangerous. Not only that, but you will feel more confident in unfamiliar surroundings. This step is not only good for the vacation you are taking, it is something you will benefit from on a day to day basis.

3. During Spring Break it is not uncommon to go out for drinks with your friends; however heed what your body is telling you and be responsible. It’s easy to get carried away with the crowd, but it’s vital that you stay alert to what you’re drinking and how much. Keep an eye on your drink and keep it covered to avoid anyone slipping a drug inside. If you decide that you want to drink while out during Spring Break, make sure you have a safe mode of transportation to get back to your living quarters; make sure that it’s a trusted driver. Check with the concierge at your hotel about which taxi services they recommend and make sure you get the number before you go out for the night.

4. When going out during the evening, remember the rule: go with your friends and leave with your friends. This greatly reduces potentially dangerous situations that you may experience with people you don’t know. It also means that each of you can look out for each other while taking care of those who may be too intoxicated. Safety is in numbers, so make sure that you don’t get left behind when out experiencing the night life at your Spring Break destination.

5. Drinking in a hot tub may seem like an exhilarating experience, but in reality it’s not. If you drink while in the hot tub you will only dilate your blood vessels in addition to lowering your blood pressure to life threatening levels. As a result, this could potentially lead to a person becoming unconsciousness and drowning.

Spring Break should be a time to relax; a time to unwind from the stresses of school and home life. And yet, in many cases, this is not always the case. Make sure to follow these 5 steps to help ensure that you have a vacation that is memorable for all the right reasons.
