Remembering Memorial Day in Safety

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is an annual event that takes place in America. Initially it was about remembering Union soldiers who had staked their lives during the American Civil War, but after World War I it was extended to include all men and women who had lost their lives in military service for the United States.

Traditionally people in the United States will fly their flags at half-mast from dawn until noon to honor those gone as many visit cemeteries and memorials. It also happens to be the birthday of Jefferson Davis, one of the well-known Confederate leaders during the American Civil War of the 1860s.

Of course, while this is a federal holiday for those to pay their respects it’s also a time for people to officially start their summer of culture events off. So-much-so, that it’s not surprising to find families enjoying picnics at the local park, going on an extended vacation or taking part in sporting events.

Due to the large crowds of people at this time it is important to always remember your safety regardless of where you are going.

If you are heading out with your family to a park, pick a spot that is easy for your children to find again after they have finished running around. You may want to consider bringing a pole that has a bright colored attraction on top that makes it both high and visible enough to see.

Before heading out make sure that you talk to your children about the importance of staying safe. Inform them that everyone they meet is not a nice person and that it is vital they stay within sight of you.

If they have an older sibling get them to look after them. This way the older sibling will see you are trusting them with more responsibility and your younger child has someone they trust around them at all times.

Tell your child or children that their voices are powerful tools that should not be forgotten when the situation calls for it. If they find themselves confronted by an individual who they think may be up to no good tell them they should raise their voices. This way they’ll draw attention to what is going on and will soon see the individual move briskly away from the area.

Predators will usually pick children who are quite and by themselves, so always make sure that your child is never alone when they are playing.

However you decide to spend your Memorial Day make sure it’s one to remember. By following the simple steps above you can make sure that everyone in your family has an enjoyable day out whether it’s visiting memorials and cemeteries or simply spending time outside in the park.

With simple steps put into place and the knowledge of what is going on around you at all times you can avoid any unwanted attention coming to your children that may harm them simply because precautions weren’t taken to begin with.
