Doggone Dawg Safety for June

Since our name is Family WATCHDOG, we wanted to touch base with some of our furry friend's safety topics!
Leaving dogs in hot cars - Obviously this is a horrible idea and we would guess not one of our followers would do such a thing! So what do you do if you see a locked in a hot car?
CONTACT THE POLICE - DIAL 911 - police will respond to the area and will notify the SPCA or Animal Care and Control unit.
CALL SPCA (IF THE POLICE DO NOT) - they will meet the police at the scene and remove the dog from the vehicle. They will also make a cruelty case to ensure that this dog is properly cared for in the future.

When walking dogs make sure to pick up their waste. Ever ruin a good day by stepping in a pile of doggie doo? We have. It's not fun. Let's get down to the stink on why picking up waste is actually helpful to the environment.
Did you know that your pet's waste can make other pets and wildlife sick? Dog waste can cause other pets and people to become sick. It can potentially carry a long list of yucks - from parvo and tapeworm to coccidian or roundworm. All which need a vet to heal. - And kids love to play on grass! So bag it and take it home to trash or flush in the toilet!
Also, remember not to walk your dog on blacktop pavement! On an 87 degree day, asphalt pavement can reach up to 140 degrees! WOW! Don't put Fido's paws on that! Stay in the grass or on concrete.

With summer and fall here and around the corner, that means Flea season! This year, like every year, make sure the cats and dogs of your family stays protected! Many pets are allergic to fleas or even become anemic due to flea bites. But did you know that fleas can give our pets tapeworm infections?
Early Prevention is key to protecting your pets! Start your pets on a monthly preventative, we like trifexis (http://www.trifexis.com/) because they prevent not only fleas, but heartworm and other internal parasites as well! It runs around $80 average for a 6 month supply.
If you already have fleas what do you do? The vet offers chewable tablets that will kill the fleas - combine that with a preventative, and they should be off in 24-48 hours. You will still need to treat your pet (Dawn dishsoap bath anyone?) and treat your home. Talk to your vet about a carpet spray that kills and protects. It can get pretty pricey this way, but it will work! It may even take a few rounds to kill all the fleas. Bet the early prevention isn't looking too bad now?

What happens if you are walking down the street and you get bit by a dog?
Assess the situation - make sure to get away from that dog at all possible. Go inside, get in a car or climb a fence. Yell to warn others or if you need help.
Take note of the dog - is it a large dog, brown dog, white dog? Does it have a red collar and three legs? Do you know the owner? Just like a hit and run auto accident, you will need to report this dog to the authorities.
Get medical treatment NOW - do not try to treat at home! If the skin is broken, you need to see a doctor! Once you are home from the doctor, you can then call the owner or the shelter to report this animal. Always think of yourself first!

This concludes our June issue. Hope you have a Doggone great summer!
