How to Make July 4th a Memorable and Safe Holiday

On July 2nd, 1776 the American Revolution saw thirteen colonies legally separate themselves from Great Britain when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution for independence. After voting for independence from Great Britain, Congress then focused its attention on a Declaration of Independence. After it was debated by Congress and the wording was shifted around for clarity it was finally signed on July 4th, 1776, a day millions of Americans still celebrate well over two hundred years later.

Of course, it goes without saying that in 2013 Americans will head to Washington D.C. for the annual firework display or enjoy home barbeques with loved ones as the festivities unfold. It is important, though, that during this time the safety of your children remains paramount as it is all too easy to forget and get caught up in the moment.

But in order to make your July 4th a memorable and safe one to enjoy consider these safety tips below:

1. Keep an eye out – Regardless of where you are going whether it's to watch fireworks in the capital or whether it's just over to a friend's house it pays to remain vigilant as to who's in the area and who may be acting suspicious. At big events such as this you never know who is likely to take advantage when you let your guard down and forget about what else is going on around you.

2. Know who to trust – Before leaving your house it is vital that you inform your child or children who they can trust if they should become separated from you. For instance, let them know that if they get lost they should approach a mother with children or a police officer in uniform who will be able to help them out.

3. Do they know your numbers – Another good measure to consider is making sure that they know how to dial your cell number from a payphone or from the help of someone else's phone. Parents who don't instil to their children their cell numbers often wished they had when they find themselves in these situations. So to avoid thinking this when the time comes get your children to learn the numbers you want beforehand.

4. Use visuals – A good way of maintaining contact with your children is by getting them to wear something that helps them stand out. This could be a multi-colored baseball cap or something on their clothes, but whatever it is make sure it is unique. This way if you need to describe to police what your child is wearing you will be able to point this out giving them something to go on compared to what everyone else is wearing.

5. Talk to them about the dangers of strangers – At times like this you are more likely to find vulnerable children or children on their own approached by strangers. In most cases, the people approaching them will just be looking out for their welfare to make sure they aren't lost, but that is not always the case. Teach your child about the importance of using their voice if they feel they may be in danger. A child drawing attention to the scene is not something a dangerous stranger wants to attract and will just as likely flee from the scene.

While these are just a few tips to consider for your 4th July celebrations they are nonetheless something to contemplate. By taking them on board you can ensure that you are your family have a safe and fun federal holiday as you enjoy America's independence.
