Have a Merry Safe Christmas

Every year Christmas seems to come around faster, but that doesn’t stop most of us from leaving the Christmas shopping until the last minute. Unfortunately, it’s during this time of the year when many of us aren't paying attention that others take advantage when our defenses are down.

There are, however, ways in which people can maintain their safety and that of their children while they are out shopping for last minute gifts. We provide a run down as to what they are below:

1. Know where you're going – Before leaving the house you should have an idea of where it is you're going. At this time of the year crowds are rampant and it is important that any young children with you are kept close by so they don't get lost in the crowds.

2. Have a plan of action in place – Make sure that when you are out shopping you have a plan of action in place. Seeing as you will know where you're going make sure that your children know where they can go if they need someone to help them find you. Point out to them that people in uniform such as police officers and parents with children are a safe bet to make when approaching strangers to ask for help.

3. Keep your possessions safe – Wherever you go and regardless of the time of year there will be opportunistic thieves waiting to take what is rightfully yours. It is a good idea to be mindful of what is going on around you, particularly during busy periods. After all, someone who may have accidentally bumped into you may in fact be slipping their hand into your open bag to steal your purse.

4. Be aware of your surroundings – It's vital that you are aware of your surroundings when you are out, especially at this time of the year. By knowing what is taking place around you you can better prepare yourself and take the necessary steps to avoid becoming involved in any unwanted situation.

5. Keep an eye on your children – With the stress of everything going on the last thing you want to worry about is trying to find a lost child. Before heading out to battle the crowds think about putting something on your child which will make them obvious to you such as a particular colour or an item that will help make them more noticeable. This way if you do become separated you have something unique that will make it easy for police to use when they find your child.

We all want to have a happy Christmas, but there are times when things go wrong that we could have had better control over. At this time of the year there are a large number of people waiting to take advantage of others who are better off than they are or who are intent on harming others. As a result of this it's important that more measure are put into place to ensure the safety of those who need it.

By taking the necessary steps you can ensure that your Christmas doesn't get off to a bad start simply because steps weren't undertaken to prevent it from happening. By being aware of what is going on around you those who may take you for a potential victim will soon see that you are not because you are well aware of what is going on and are ready to prevent anything from happening.
